Pet Peeve #124: Cryptic Filenames

Content, Marketing, WTF

Nine times out of 10, when I download a PDF, Word doc, etc. from a site, the filename is some cryptic string of letters and numbers. I’m sure it makes sense to the code crackers at NASA, but when I try to download a printer template, how the heck am I supposed to find it when it’s named “c_041_us0_biz_ptedg_8sh_lan_bck.doc?” It’s usually not a problem if I open the doc right away. But often, when I need to find it days or weeks later, I end up having to download it again from the site since I can’t find it on my hard drive.

Simple solution #124: Name your downloadable files something that makes sense to the user. Hm, I don’t know, like maybe “Avery_template_8373_landscape_back.doc”
